GETTING STARTED | AD SIZES | COLOR IMAGES & FONTS | FORMATS & SIZES | PREPARING YOUR AD | TIPS FOR BETTER ADS

Welcome to The Spokesman-Review ad upload site. In order to be sure your ad will successfully be delivered to our Prepress Department, please take a few minutes to read the following information regarding sizes, colors, deadlines, and other general tips. If you have any questions about this site, please contact us (prepress@spokesman.com) or call your account executive.

GETTING STARTED

Before going live with your first digital ad, please submit a test ad through this site using the application you intend to use when you submit live ads. Our technicians will test the ad on our equipment and verify that output can be successful. After completing the test, your first ad must be submitted on one-proof service (48 hours prior to publication for ROP ads). If no problems are encountered with your first live ad, subsequent digital ads will be accepted on the 0-proof service. Some special sections and certain products (i.e. TV Week) have advanced deadlines. At this time, The Spokesman-Review cannot correct digital ads. If corrections need to be made on a digital ad you will be responsible for submitting a revised ad.

Email-attached ads are only accepted on a limited basis due to time constraints and size restrictions. If possible, we like to accommodate any special needs our advertisers have when we can complete the necessary preparation within our deadline restrictions. Please contact your Account Executive if you have an ad which may require exceptional planning and/or coordination. Please refer to The Spokesman-Review's current rate card for acceptance and legal policies. If you have any questions about electronic services at The Spokesman-Review please call your sales representative or Display Advertising.

AD SIZES

Please be sure you build your ad to the correct size. Some products may have special sizes that differ from our standard ROP sizes. If you have any questions, be sure to check with your account exec prior to constructing your ad. Our standard ad sizes for ROP and Classified insertions are listed below.

COLOR IMAGES AND FONTS

Black-plus-one color ads are referred to as "spot color." However, because often a spot color will be placed on a full color capacity page, we request that all color ads be made by process (CMYK). The Spokesman-Review uses the NAA ROP Newspaper Color Ink Book, Volume 8, for spot color tints. A brochure depicting these colors is available from your Account Executive.

KEYS TO SUCCESSFUL SEPARATIONS:
The Spokesman-Review prints in 1- or 4-color process. Always be sure your art is set up using only Black, Greyscale or CMYK process colors. Spot colors, Pantone colors, and color profiles may cause art to separate incorrectly and must be converted to CMYK process prior to to submitting your ad. Our preflight process will convert all files to CMYK or Greyscale, but we cannot guarantee such conversions will result in the originally intended color or tone.

Additionally, be sure all picture files and other graphics in your ad are set up in CMYK process colors only and do not use RGB, Spot, or embedded Color Profiles. Resolution for all bitmap images must be at an absolute minute of 166 ppi/dpi. Standard resolution is 200dpi.

FONTS:
In order to keep your text in line, always use Postscript fonts. Truetype fonts are acceptable, but Postscript fonts are much more reliable for printing. Always embed all fonts in your PDFs to keep your type from dropping out at the press.

FORMATS AND SIZES

This site is set up to receive ads in PDF format only, Distilled to our specifications. PDFs must be the same size as the ad space they are to fill (see Ad Sizes below). Make sure your PDFs are created in CMYK color or Greyscale only, with all fonts embedded.

Most layout and design programs now have "save as" or "export as PDF" features. We have found that you will have better reproduction control and accuracy if you create an eps or postscript file and distill that file using Adobe's Acrobat Distiller. Ads created using either the "save as" or "export" features do not always embed the fonts or keep the resolution of your original graphic images. Specifically, ads created using PDF creators, the Macintosh OSX PDF creator, printing and saving as a PDF, or exporting from any program as a PDF should be avoided.

To insure you are using the correct settings when distilling your files, you may download a Distiller Joboptions File to place in your settings folder (HardDrive - Library - Application Support - Adobe PDF - Settings) from our Welcome page. If you have any questions or concerns about the creation of your PDF files, please contact the Prepress Department (email us at prepress@spokesman.com) or your account executive prior to submission. It is always better to discuss your concerns in advance in order to head off any possible problems later. If you would prefer to have the Distiller Joboptions in text form, please contact the Prepress Department.

PREPARING YOUR AD

Your ad must be created in QuarkXpress, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, or Freehand. The Spokesman-Review currently uses Adobe Acrobat (9x) as our PDF (portable document format) application. Please contact your Account Executive for acceptable versions. When submitting your PDF ad, make sure all images and fonts are embedded.

If submitting your ad in a native application, please keep your files orgainzed and make sure your ad is COMPLETE. Only include the items needed to print the ad. Images will not print correctly (or will print bit-mapaped) if the original image file is not included. We have received entire image libraries, font directories, etc. with ads, which slows things down. Keep it simple - the printing will go much smoother. And please remember: all ads submitted in their native applications will need to be submitted on CDs, as this site has been designed to accept only PDF files. Please contact your Account Executive for specific information.

REMEMBER: All electronic ads are considered camera ready.

TIPS FOR BETTER ADS

We want your ad to process smoothly and look just like it does on your screen when it hits the morning newspaper. Because The Spokesman-Review is electronically paginated, and for accurate billing purposes, it is extremely important that ads be made correctly. Using the information below, please be sure your ad is built to the right size.

DO NOT use nested QuarkXpress EPS files. They will not print correctly.

DO NOT rotate graphics or images in a page layout program (QuarkXpress or InDesign). Our imagesetters grind to a halt when they encounter rotated images in a page layout program. Rotate the art in the program it originates from (Photoshop, Freehand, Illustrator, etc.) then import it into the page layout application. When creating clipping paths in Photoshop, please minimize the number of points used and remember to save the photo file as an EPS file. All ads at The Spokesman-Review are printed using a 100 line screen.
